A man was arrested after he allegedly robbed a woman right in front of a Redwood City patrol officer on Christmas, according to police. Police Officer Carmine Galotta was patrolling near Virginia Avenue and Anamor Street when he saw the suspect rob a 65-year-old woman at 12:22 p.m., police said. The woman had been walking on Virginia Avenue when the suspect grabbed her by the arm and took a shopping bag out of her hands.
Galotta attempted to stop the suspect, but he got into a nearby vehicle, which sped away, police said. The officer followed the car until it crashed into a parked vehicle on Hampton Avenue. The suspected, identified as 42-year-old transient Jeffery Smith, was arrested. He was found with the woman’s money and possessions, which were returned to her, police said. Smith was booked into San Mateo County Jail on suspicion of robbery and a parole violation, police said.
