An 18-year-old man was arrested over the weekend on suspicion of murdering another teen in Bay Point in September, a Contra Costa County sheriff’s spokesman said today. Deputies surrounded a home in the 2700 block of Carpinteria Drive in Antioch around 4 p.m. Saturday and captured Bay Point resident Daniel Castano in a neighboring yard as he attempted to flee, sheriff’s spokesman Jimmy Lee said.

Lee said Castano was arrested on suspicion of murder and participation in a criminal street gang. He was taken to county jail in Martinez, where he is being held on $2 million bail. Investigators believe Castano fired several times at 17-year-old Martinez resident Fernando Gonzalez as he sat in a car near Marina Road and Inlet Drive in Bay Point on the afternoon of Sept. 6. Emergency responders administered first aid, but Gonzalez was pronounced dead at the scene. He had been shot in the chest, according to the Contra Costa County coroner’s office. Lee said the shooting is believed to be gang-related.
