Two men were charged with two counts of murder today for the brutal shooting deaths of two teenage girls near Brookdale Park in East Oakland three weeks ago. Suspects Diantay Powell, 18, and Antonio Edwards, 19, both of Oakland, are scheduled to be arraigned this afternoon at the Wiley Manuel Courthouse in Oakland. In addition to the two murder counts, they are both charged with the special circumstance of committing multiple murders, an allegation that could lead to the death penalty if they are convicted.

They are charged in connection with the deaths of 15-year-old Raquel Gerstel and 16-year-old Bobbie Sartain in the 2600 block of Minna Avenue, near Brookdale, shortly before 6 a.m. Nov. 25. The two girls were friends who grew up together in Alameda.

Gerstel lived in San Leandro and was a freshman at Arroyo High School in San Lorenzo. Sartain lived on High Street in Oakland, a few blocks from where the shooting happened. Oakland police have provided few details on the case but a woman who lives nearby and heard the shooting said police told residents that they found dozens of shell casings at the scene.

I cared for and loved Bobbie very much, she was beautiful and intelligent young lady. She could have been anything she wanted to be. But those ignorant animals decided that she wasn’t going to see her 17th birthday. I hope they get the worst the state has to offer. Neither of them deserves to live

If mr. Briggs cared so much about his daughter. Why did he allow his minor daughter and her younger friend to leave his home at 5 in the morning? If she was not following the rules she should have been grounded and not allowed to go anywhere! Especially if she was skipping school. Mr Briggs has to take some responsibility too! And should spend some time in jail. 16 and 15 year olds belong under adult supervision at all times. Especially girls! It is no secret Oakland has some very violent ignorant people roaming the streets. Particularly at night and on high street……Justin marsh
