A suspicious device prompted the shutdown of a shopping center in West Oakland for a couple of hours this evening before investigators could determine that the device was harmless, police said.

The device was spotted by security in the parking lot of the Jack London Gateway shopping center near the intersection of Seventh and Market streets, police spokeswoman Officer Johnna Watson said. Officers responded at 4:41 p.m. and located the device and secured the area.

The Alameda County Sheriff’s Office bomb squad was called to the scene and eventually neutralized the device and determined it was not a danger to the public, Watson said. The all-clear was given and crews cleared the scene at 6:41 p.m., police said. No injuries were reported in connection with the incident, which remains under investigation, Watson said.
