Benicia police today arrested a man suspected of passing counterfeit $20 bills within the city over the past 10 days. The suspect targeted convenience stores and coffee shops on at least four occasions, Lt. Frank Hartig said. A police officer recognized a vehicle that was involved in a previous forgery and counterfeit case leaving the Southampton Shopping Center on Southampton Road, where a Starbucks coffee shop is located, around 6:30 a.m. today, Hartig said.
The officer stopped the car and noticed the driver matched photos of the suspect of the forgery and counterfeit case, Hartig said. One of the forgery and counterfeit victims was driven to the scene and identified Laurence Fonseca, 25, of Benicia, as the suspect who passed counterfeit money at her business, Hartig said. Fonseca admitted creating counterfeit money and passing or trying to pass the fake bills in Benicia on Nov. 21, 27 and 28, Hartig said.
The businesses victimized are the Chevron Extra Mile station at 10 Solano Square, Valero gas station at 1925 E. 2nd St. and the Starbucks at 820 Southampton Road, Hartig said. Fonseca was booked in the Solano County jail on 12 counts of forgery, six counts of commercial burglary and one count of violating his probation for a previous felony theft conviction, Hartig said. Any businesses that received counterfeit money in the recent past is asked to call Benicia police at (707) 745-3411, or Detective Sgt. Roger Yokoi at (707) 746-4244.
