Watsonville police have arrested an embezzlement suspect after a month-long investigation, police said. Detectives served a search warrant and arrested Jason Matthew Haas, 35, at his home in the 1600 block of Merrill Street in unincorporated Santa Cruz on Nov. 21 on suspicion of embezzling money from a client. Haas, who conducts business under the name Payroll Management Group, had been providing payroll services to the San Jose-based transportation company Royal Coach Tours, Watsonville police said.

The investigation led police to believe that Haas used his payroll software to convert Royal Coach Tours’ payroll tax funds into checks made out to his own management group between March and September 2012. During that time, police believe Haas unlawfully took approximately $567,654.21 from Royal Coach Tours that should have been paid to the state of California and the Internal Revenue Service.

Haas was previously arrested in connection with a 2011 investigation reported by a restaurant in San Jose, police said. Watsonville police said Haas is a suspect in ongoing investigations in Santa Clara County, San Benito County, and Troy, Michigan. Anyone with information about the investigation is encouraged to call Watsonville police at (831) 768-3358 or anonymously at (831) 768-3544.
