A woman accused of bludgeoning the mother of her wife to death with a machete pleaded not guilty to murder charges today and a judge set a preliminary hearing for April 30, the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office said. Sagal Sadiq, 41, who is charged in the brutal slaying of 65-year-old Yvonne Kirk in San Jose last Dec. 30, made her plea in Santa Clara County Superior Court, according to Deputy District Attorney Dan Fehderau.
Sadiq is represented by Rafael Trujillo, a criminal defense attorney based in San Francisco, Fehderau said. The judge set the preliminary hearing five months ahead because of both attorneys’ busy schedules, Fehderau said. The district attorney’s office alleges that Sadiq used a machete to kill Yvonne Kirk during an argument involving Kirk’s daughter, Minema Kirk, who was also Sadiq’s wife, in the couple’s San Jose home.
