Two Marin County men were arrested after leading police on a vehicle pursuit from Novato to Petaluma and back Monday afternoon, a Novato police corporal said. Novato police officers tried to stop a vehicle for a traffic violation in the 1700 block of Grant Avenue around 4:50 p.m., Cpl. Chris Andres said.

The driver, Donald Smith, 32, of Novato, sped away as his passenger, Giovanni Allison, 27, of Marin City, discarded suspected narcotics from the vehicle, Andres said. A pursuing police officer had to take evasive action to avoid being hit when Smith veered his vehicle at the officer’s patrol car, Andres said. Officers followed Smith’s car onto northbound U.S. Highway 101 into Sonoma County where Smith turned around in Petaluma and headed back toward Novato, Andres said.

The California Highway Patrol took over the pursuit and forced the vehicle to stop at Ignacio Boulevard and Enfrente Road, Andres said. Smith was arrested for assault with a deadly weapon, DUI, reckless driving and evading a police officer, and Allison was arrested for possession of narcotics and destruction of evidence, Andres said. Both men were booked into the Marin County jail.
