A suspected shoplifter and auto thief who evaded police by jumping off a bridge into the Napa River on Monday was arrested hours later at a homeless encampment, Napa police said. Steven Stone, 34, is suspected of stealing items from the Target store at 205 Soscal Ave. in Bel Aire Plaza around 11:40 a.m., police said. He allegedly fled in a red 2010 Toyota Corolla that had been reported stolen from Redding, Capt. Jeff Troendly said.

Officers spotted the Toyota on Trancas Street and pursued it as it collided with an occupied vehicle at Jefferson Street, police said. The suspect got out of the damaged Toyota and jumped off the bridge into the Napa River, according to police. The person inside the other car was not injured.

Police, Napa County sheriff’s deputies and a California Highway Patrol helicopter crew searched the area but did not find the suspect. Around 7 p.m., officers received information that led them to a campsite under the bridge, where they found Stone. Stone, a Lake County resident, was arrested on suspicion of burglary, vehicle theft, evading arrest in a vehicle, and hit-and-run, Troendly said.
