A Vallejo man was arrested Thursday on suspicion of assaulting his live-in girlfriend and firing a gun through the wall of the bathroom where she sought shelter, a police sergeant said. The victim said an argument started when her boyfriend, Christopher Merino-Burnett, 22, returned to their residence in the 500 block of Almond Street during the early morning hours Thursday, Sgt. Kevin Coelho said. The victim said when she locked herself in a bathroom, Merino-Burnett fired a bullet from a handgun through the bathroom wall, kicked the door in and physically assaulted her, Coelho said. It was reported Merino-Burnett “would shoot it out with the police” if they were called, Coelho said.
The victim said her boyfriend and another person who was visiting the home took some pills and fell asleep after the assault, Coelho said. While they were asleep, the victim escaped the residence with the couple’s child and went to the Vallejo Police Department, Coelho said. When she told police her boyfriend had a gun and rifle, the Vallejo-Benicia South County Regional SWAT team responded, and the Vallejo Police Hostage Negotiation Team made phone contact with Merino-Burnett, Coelho said. Merino-Burnett eventually left the residence and was arrested and booked into the Solano County jail for domestic violence, assault, threats and weapons violations, Coelho said. Police recovered two assault rifles and a 9mm pistol from the home, Coelho said.
