A man was shot and killed by Santa Clara police on Wednesday night after he allegedly threatened his father with a knife, police said. Officers responded to reports of a domestic disturbance at an apartment in the 1300 block of Reeve Street at 11:17 p.m. Police said a conflict between a 41-year-old Santa Clara man and his 66-year-old father had turned violent. The officers mediated the situation, and the fight appeared to have subsided, according to police. Neither man had been injured. However, as the officers were leaving the scene, yelling was heard inside the home and the two men started fighting again, police said. The son had armed himself with a knife and refused to drop it, according to police. He raised the knife “in a threatening manner” and moved toward his father, police said.

Three officers fired their weapons to prevent the father from being hurt or killed, police said. Paramedics responded and pronounced the son dead at the scene. The shooting is being investigated by the Police Department and the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office. The officers have been with the Santa Clara Police Department for 10, 12 and 16 years, respectively.
