A man who died at the Santa Cruz County Jail on Saturday morning after being arrested by the California Highway Patrol suffered a heart attack, a jail spokesman said today. Rickey Pritchard, 59, was being processed at the jail at 259 Water St. after being arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence, Santa Cruz County sheriff’s Lt. Jeremy Verinsky said. Verinksy said Prichard was in the booking area when officers “found him unresponsive” around 6:40 a.m. Jail staff, including medical professionals, tried to resuscitate Pritchard and called in paramedics, but he died despite their efforts, according to the sheriff’s office. “It’s one of those things that could’ve happened at any time, anywhere,” Verinsky said. “There was no use of force, no resisting arrest, no crash.”
