An empty school bus had two of its windows shattered by an unknown gunman as it drove through Santa Cruz County on Thursday. The bus driver was driving past the Northgate Apartments at 485 Holohan Road when the shooting occurred 7:10 p.m. The area is close to the Watsonville city limits, the sheriff’s office said. As the bus driver passed the apartment building, he thought he heard the sound of nearby construction work. When he arrived at the bus storage yard however, he saw that two of the bus’s windows had been shattered.
Sheriff’s deputies who arrived with Watsonville police to investigate concluded that the damage was caused by at least two rounds shot from a .22 caliber weapon as the driver passed the apartments. Sheriff’s deputies said that immediate area was searched but no shooter was located. The bus was not occupied by students at the time of the shooting and it does not appear as though the shooter was trying to harm the driver, the sheriff’s office said. The sheriff’s office said that it has informed resource officers at local schools to make sure students are safe.
