A man who shot himself in the head while running from police in Hayward on Tuesday afternoon has died, a Hayward police spokesman said. The man, whose name has not been released, was breathing but unresponsive when medical personnel transported him to a hospital, Lt. Roger Keener said.

Police received calls at about 4 p.m. Tuesday from residents reporting a strange man acting suspiciously in the area of Montgomery Street, Keener said. Keener said the man was wandering around on Montgomery Street, just north of Simon Street, walking up driveways and behaving bizarrely, Keener said. Neighbors told police that the man might be carrying a gun, Keener said. When an arriving officer spotted the man, he ran away, Keener said.

After a short chase, the officer heard a gunshot, Keener said. The officer found the man on the ground with a gunshot wound to the head, he said. Police found a firearm next to him, Keener said. Keener said the man was pronounced dead late Tuesday night.
