An elderly San Pablo woman was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence on Sunday after she struck a man with her car near the University of California at Berkeley campus, leaving him in critical condition, a police spokeswoman said. Berkeley police received reports of an injury collision at the intersection of Hearst Avenue and Spruce Street at 8:35 p.m., Berkeley police spokeswoman Jennifer Coats said.

The driver, Mary Lou Cordova, 83, was traveling west on Hearst Avenue when she struck the 24-year-old Oakland man, who was attempting to cross the street toward the UC Berkeley campus, Coats said. The victim was transported to a hospital with severe injuries, and remains there in critical condition, she said.

It is unclear whether the victim has an affiliation with the campus, Coats said. Cordova stayed at scene to speak with investigators, was determined to be driving under the influence, and was arrested, police said.
