A 38-year-old man was arrested in Oakland early this morning after stabbing a man in a San Leandro apartment, a police lieutenant said. Around 1:05 a.m., police received a report of an assault in an apartment in the 600 block of Fargo Avenue, according to Lt. Jeff Tudor. Arriving officers found the victim, a 57-year-old man, suffering from multiple stab wounds to his upper torso.

Police learned that the suspect, identified as Michael Hilburn of Newark, had stabbed the man with an object similar to an ice pick before fleeing the scene in a white Chevy Suburban, police said. Hilburn allegedly knew the victim, according to police. The victim was taken to an area hospital to be treated for non-life-threatening injuries. Officers got information that Hilburn was possibly driving in the area of 105th Avenue in Oakland.

A short time later, a San Leandro police officer spotted the suspect vehicle near the intersection of 105th Avenue and International Boulevard. The suspect fled from officers who attempted to pull him over, leading them on a brief chase.

He then pulled his car over on Foothill Boulevard at Stanley Avenue where he was arrested without incident. Tudor credited the officers involved for acting quickly to trace the suspect. “Officers were able to gather critical information very quickly, which allowed for us to locate and arrest Hilburn shortly after the incident,” Tudor said.
