Police evacuated a park in the San Leandro Marina today because of an armed man there who turned out to be suicidal, police said. Police responded to a call from an off-duty officer reporting a man with a gun at the San Leandro Marina Park Path and Par Course at 1:35 p.m. When police arrived, they saw the man about 100 yards away with what appeared to be a handgun. They evacuated the park, the path and the course. A California Highway Patrol aircraft and a Hayward police armored vehicle also responded to assist.
Police said the man took out a knife and began cutting his arms and making suicidal threats. A hostage negotiator could not get the man to stop, and officers then used less lethal weapons on him. He was detained and taken to a hospital for treatment. The gun he was carrying turned out to be a replica, police said.
