A grass fire being investigated as arson broke out near the Hercules Teen Center this afternoon, Rodeo-Hercules Fire District officials said. Fire crews responded to a grass fire near the Hercules Teen Center at 2007 Refugio Valley Road in Hercules at 2:53 p.m., fire officials said. A fire was burning in brush and eucalyptus trees next to a walking trail when fire crews arrived.
The area of about 10,000 square feet was quickly extinguished, fire officials said. The fire was declared under control at 4:01 p.m. No structures were damaged and no injuries were reported. An investigation turned up a barbecue lighter left at the scene. The blaze is being investigated as possible arson, fire officials said. The Pinole Fire Department was called to assist.
