A Novato man was arrested Thursday night for public intoxication and obstructing emergency personnel from removing an ill, elderly man from a bar, a Marin County sheriff’s lieutenant said. Sheriff’s deputies and the Bolinas Fire Department went to Smiley’s Saloon in Bolinas around 8:10 p.m. after the bartender reported an elderly man was suffering a medical emergency, Lt. Barry Heying said.

Stuart J. Sommers, 53, tried to interfere with firefighters as they tried to treat the ill man, Heying said. Sommers, who was apparently intoxicated, physically blocked the paramedics’ access to the rear of an ambulance, Heying said. Sommers was arrested after a brief struggle and was booked into the Marin County jail for obstructing emergency personnel and public intoxication, Heying said.
