A man fatally shot in Salinas on Wednesday evening has been identified as 22-year-old Richard Pimentel, according to police. Pimentel, a Salinas resident, was killed in the shooting reported around 6:10 p.m. in the 300 block of North Main Street. The suspect walked by Pimentel when, for an unknown reason, he turned around and shot him in the back of the head, police Officer Miguel Cabrera said.
Pimentel was pronounced dead at the scene. The suspect, described as a Hispanic man between 30 and 40 years old who was wearing a red shirt and dark pants, was last seen running behind a Salvation Army store on North Main Street toward Bridge Street, police said. Cabrera said even though the killing occurred during a peak commute time on a main thoroughfare in Salinas, few people apparently witnessed the shooting. The motive for the slaying does not appear to be gang-related, he said. The killing of Pimentel is the 15th homicide of 2012 in Salinas.
