A Davis man was arrested after allegedly stealing a car, crashing it and running from it as it went up in flames on Highway 24 this morning, according to the Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office. A woman in the first block of Moraga Way reported that a man had knocked her down and stolen her black 2011 Honda Civic around 12:40 a.m., sheriff’s spokesman Jimmy Lee said. About 10 minutes later, CHP officers informed the sheriff’s office that they were handling a traffic collision on eastbound state Highway 24 near Oak Hill Road, Lee said. The car involved in the crash was on fire, and witnesses said they saw a man running from the vehicle.
After confirming that the car on fire was the Honda Civic that had been carjacked, police attempted to locate the suspect. A Lafayette police officer later found the suspect, identified as 27-year-old Mark Dilley of Davis, at a shopping center on Mt. Diablo Road, Lee said. He was arrested and transported to John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek to be treated for minor injuries suffered in the crash.
Dilley was then taken to county jail in Martinez and booked on suspicion of carjacking, vehicle theft, drug possession, having a suspended license and a probation violation. He is being held on $125,000 bail.
