A man who was shot and killed by police after a chase in Antioch Monday night has been identified as 32-year-old Pedro Ruiz III of Antioch, a Contra Costa County coroner’s deputy said today. Ruiz, a suspect in a domestic violence incident, was shot on a rooftop in Antioch after allegedly pointing a gun at officers, according to police. Police said officers initially attempted to contact Ruiz while responding to a report of domestic violence involving a gun around 11:15 p.m. Monday at 2301 Sycamore Drive.

Instead, Ruiz fled from officers, jumping into a vehicle and leading them on a chase across town, police said. During the chase, the Antioch man struck two police patrol cars, crashed his car and fled on foot, scaling fences and running through backyards. Officers caught up with Ruiz as he stood on the roof of a home in Wainfleet Court, police said. When the 32-year-old allegedly turned his gun on the officers, one fired back, striking him at least once, according to police.

Ruiz died at the scene around 12:25 a.m. Tuesday, according to the coroner’s office. Antioch police and the Contra Costa County District Attorney’s Office are investigating the fatal shooting, which is standard procedure for officer-involved shootings, police said.
