A 16-year-old girl and her 10-year-old brother hid in a closet at their Fremont home Thursday afternoon while three burglary suspects entered the house, Fremont police said. The siblings called 911 after they saw three men break into their house on Nuttman Lane around 2:20 p.m., police said. The pair hid in a locked closet upstairs and stayed on the phone with police dispatch until officers arrived. The suspects heard the brother and sister upstairs and banged on the closet door and demanded they come out just as police arrived at the home, police said. When the suspects saw officers had arrived outside they fled from the house in three different directions on foot, police said.
Officers set up a perimeter and detained the suspects after several short foot pursuits, police said. The final suspect gave up when an officer announced an imminent canine search, according to police. Fremont police Detective Bill Veteran said the two children were OK after the robbery attempt and nothing was taken or damaged from the home. A search of the suspects’ vehicle at the scene turned up stolen property from a Newark burglary from earlier in the day, according to Veteran. The three men, identified as Oakland 18-year-olds Kenneth Denson, and Marvin Matthews, and Alameda resident Demarkus Benavides, 25, were arrested on robbery charges. Benavides and Denson were booked at Santa Rita Jail, while Matthews was taken to the Fremont Police Department Jail Facility, Veteran said. They were each held on $220,000 bail. The trio is scheduled to be arraigned Monday at the Fremont Hall of Justice.
