A Palo Alto resident who lives near a home where a suspicious object was found this afternoon said everyone on her block is being told to shelter in place. A canister was apparently found in front of a home in the 700 block of Maplewood Avenue, said Rosadena Harmon, 85, who lives across the street from the police activity. The neighbor, who has lived in the area since 1954, was told to stay inside around 3:20 p.m. when she walked out to her driveway and noticed many emergency vehicles lined up the block.

She said a firefighter told her someone would come to the door when all was clear. She said a black van that appeared to be part of a bomb squad was parked across the street near 711 Maplewood Drive as of 3:40 p.m. Palo Alto police said they could not immediately provide more details about the incident.
