A 50-year-old man suspected of intentionally sparking a 4-acre grass fire at a Palo Alto open land preserve last week was arrested today, Palo Alto police said. Damon Lee Luce was taken into custody at 9:15 a.m. this morning when he was found at the Industrial Hotel at 505 Cypress Ave. in South San Francisco, police said. Luce was charged with five counts of felony arson connected to a grass fire that was reported around 4 p.m. last Wednesday at the Enid W. Pearson-Arastradero Preserve near 1529 Arastradero Road in Palo Alto.
Twenty minutes after the fire was reported, a nearby bicyclist told a firefighter that he had seen a suspicious person near the scene, police said. Police found and detained a man at the scene, later identified as Luce, who matched the bicyclist’s description. However, Luce was later released until this morning’s arrest when police followed up on results from additional investigation. Luce is believed to have acted alone in the arson, police said.
