A Napa High School math teacher has been arrested for allegedly having an inappropriate relationship with a 16-year-old female student, a Napa police sergeant said. Sean Belhumeur, 37, of St. Helena, was arrested Monday on suspicion of meeting with a minor for sexual interest and annoying or molesting a child, Sgt. Chase Haag said.

Haag said investigators learned that Belhumeur had allegedly had inappropriate contact with the girl on school grounds around the first week of June, and had a relationship with her until July. Police interviewed Belhumeur at police headquarters on Monday and obtained evidence in a search of his home in the 2600 block of Spring Street in St. Helena, Haag said.

He was arrested and booked into Napa County Jail. He has since posted bail, and is scheduled to be arraigned in Napa County Superior Court on Sept. 18. Napa Valley Unified School District Superintendent Patrick Sweeney said Belhumeur began teaching math at the high school on Aug. 17, 2006. Belhumeur has been placed on administrative leave, Sweeney said. “We feel a deep sense of sadness regarding the impact of these circumstances on the student,” Sweeney said. “Counseling has been offered to the student.
