A former Hayward resident has been arrested in connection with two San Mateo residential burglaries on Friday, police said. Devante Hampton, 20, a transient who previously lived in Hayward, was arrested Tuesday in Contra Costa County on an arrest warrant for two San Mateo burglaries, as well as other warrants outstanding in Contra Costa County. Hampton was identified as a suspect by San Mateo detectives for residential burglaries that occurred in May and June, police said.
In the first burglary on May 18, a resident in the 1500 block of Cherrywood Drive spotted two men walking next to her house around 1:30 p.m. and called police. The men escaped before police arrived, but had allegedly already committed one burglary in the area. On June 4, a resident in the 300 block of Greenfield Avenue spotted three men with a similar description in the backyard of a home around 6:45 p.m. and called police. The suspects fled before police arrived, and officers determined a burglary had already occurred in the home.
The suspects in the second burglary were not located but they abandoned their vehicle a short distance away. By examining the vehicle and tracking down its registered owner that police were able to connect Hampton to the burglaries. The investigation is ongoing and more arrests are possible. Police are working with other agencies to determine if Hampton can be linked to other burglaries.
