Two weeks after releasing a video of a suspect taking a suitcase full of items from a Belmont home, police have arrested a Hayward man believed to be the burglar caught on film. Working on tips received from the public after releasing the surveillance video on July 18, detectives were able to identify 32-year-old John Anthony Bentley and a green 2000 Mercedes CL500 registered in his name, Belmont police Lt. Pat Halleran said. The video — which was filmed by a residential security camera in the 1500 block of Sixth Avenue on July 10 — showed a man parking a green Mercedes near the victim’s home at the time of the burglary, and loading it with a black suitcase. The suitcase was among several items taken from the victim’s home, including electronics and jewelry, Halleran said.
Some of the stolen items were found when police contacted Bentley on Tuesday at his Hayward home in the 600 block of Schafer Road, Halleran said. The green Mercedes was also located at Bentley’s home, police said. Bentley was arrested without incident and booked into San Mateo County jail for burglary and possession of stolen property. Belmont Police Chief Daniel DeSmidt said in a statement that the tips that came in from the public were key to tracking down the alleged burglar. “We would like to thank the media for getting the information on this case out to the public, and thank the members of the public who came forward with information,” DeSmidt said.
