A Martinez man was arrested Thursday morning after leading Benicia police on a short high-speed chase in a stolen vehicle, police said. Benicia police attempted to make the traffic stop at E. Second Street and Interstate Highway 780 of a tan Honda Accord at 4:33 a.m. when the vehicle sped off, Benicia police said. The vehicle fled and headed northbound on E. Second, reaching 100 m.p.h., police said.
An officer reported the Honda was being driven by a male driver and had a female passenger in the right front seat. The police officer attempting to make the stop pursued the Honda but lost sight of the vehicle and suspects in the 4700 block of E. Second. While conducting an area check, another officer located the two suspects in the area of Park Road and Industrial Way and took them into custody, police said.
The female, a 20-year-old Antioch resident, took police to the 600 block of Industrial where the pair had abandoned the Honda. The Honda had been reported stolen on July 16 from Antioch, police said. The male driver, John Sanborn, 31, of Martinez, was arrested for stealing the vehicle after finding a “shaved” ignition key in his possession, police said. He was also arrested for possession of stolen property, evading police in a motor vehicle, driving with a suspended license, and probation violation. Sanborn was currently on probation in Contra Costa County for vehicle theft, police said. The woman was released without being charged.
