Several city offices were briefly evacuated this afternoon when a resident dropped off a suspicious device to the Monterey Police Department, a city spokeswoman said. Around 2 p.m., someone dropped off an unexploded, expired ordnance used in atmospheric testing at the Police Department, located in the 500 block of Pacific Street, spokeswoman Anne McGrath said.
Police and fire personnel decided as a precaution to evacuate City Hall and other city buildings in the surrounding two blocks and cordoned off the area, McGrath said. The evacuation lasted about 90 minutes until the ammunition supplier was able to confirm the device was not dangerous, McGrath said. No injuries were reported.
