A Petaluma woman was arrested today after allegedly trying to carjack two women in a supermarket parking lot by pretending to have a gun. Police allege Ashley Elizabeth Barnes, 26, approached a woman in the parking lot of a Raleys Supermarket at 157 N. McDowell Blvd. shortly before 9 a.m., according to Sgt. Marty Frye. Barnes allegedly placed her hand under her shirt and, pretending she had a handgun, ordered the victim to turn over her car keys.

The woman refused and fled. Barnes then allegedly tried the same thing with another woman who had just parked her car. That woman also refused, fled the area and notified the police, Frye said. Police found Barnes as she left a business in the shopping center and arrested her on suspicion of attempting carjacking, violation of probation, possession of drug paraphernalia and being under the influence of a controlled substance.

Barnes is on probation out of Sonoma County for possession of a loaded firearm and obstructing an officer, and had an outstanding arrest out of Marin County for public intoxication. She was booked into Sonoma County jail with bail set at $15,000.
