On June 29, 2012, Los Altos police officers responded to the report of a burglary in the 2000 block of El Sereno Avenue. This crime is believed to have been perpetrated by use of a ruse distraction technique. The first suspect contacted the victim by knocking on the front door at about 11:00am. The suspect inquired about purchasing a vehicle, which was parked in the victim’s driveway. The victim was lured outside to discuss the potential purchase; the front door was left unattended and unsecured.
The suspect continued questioning the victim for approximately 20 minutes, at which time the second suspect appeared. The victim advised the suspects to speak with her husband regarding the potential purchase. She attempted to get a phone number, or name, but was unsuccessful. The suspects advised they would return at 5:00pm, but never did. It appears that the second suspect entered the home while the first suspect distracted the victim.
The victim later discovered an undisclosed amount of jewelry missing from the residence. This type of distraction technique is common and we have seen criminals will tend to target a particular city or neighborhood for several days before moving to another location. For this reason, we are asking residents to be aware of this type of crime and immediately notify the police department of any such unusual activity.
