The California Highway Patrol has arrested a man they believe fled the scene of a crash that killed a 17-year-old boy near Petaluma early today. Michael Scott Harmon, 41, of Vallejo, was arrested after he surrendered to the CHP late this morning. The Sonoma County coroner’s office has identified the teen killed as Jahzeel Forsen, of American Canyon.
The two-car crash was reported around 12:15 a.m. near Lakeville and Old Lakeville roads, southeast of Petaluma. CHP Officer Jon Sloat said a man was driving a 1969 Ford pickup truck south on Lakeville Road when he ran off the roadway for unknown reasons and struck an embankment. He lost control of the truck and swerved into lanes of oncoming traffic, where he struck the driver’s side of a northbound 1985 GMC pickup truck,
killing the driver, later identified as Forsen, Sloat said. Officers responding to the crash found the teen unconscious. He was later pronounced dead. The driver of the Ford fled the scene on foot, and the CHP and other law enforcement agencies scoured the area for him.
Sloat said the registered owner of the Ford was identified as Harmon, who matched the description of the man seen running from the scene of the crash, Sloat said. Harmon contacted the Rohnert Park-area CHP by phone at 10 a.m. He was brought in for questioning and later arrested, Sloat said.
