Buildings in the area of Seventh and Franklin streets in Oakland are being evacuated until further notice because of a suspicious device found nearby, police said. Oakland police spokeswoman Johnna Watson said police received a call at 9:01 a.m. from an employee of the Salvation Army at 601 Webster St. reporting the discovery of a suspicious device. Watson said the device was found in “some type of cooler” in a loading dock area.
The components inside the cooler include wires, duct tape and foam, she said. “That obviously causes concern for us,” Watson said. The Alameda County sheriff’s bomb squad has been summoned to the scene. Meanwhile, police have been evacuating nearby buildings, and have closed off an area bounded by Sixth, Eighth, Broadway and Webster streets, she said.
