A man turned himself in to police today and said he killed the woman he had been living with for more than 10 years at their home in Orinda, according to police. Officers responded to the 600 block of Moraga Way after receiving a call at 12:18 p.m. by someone in the neighborhood reporting a homicide, Orinda police Chief Jeff Jennings said. During the call, a man could be heard in the background saying he had killed his girlfriend, Jennings said.

While police were preparing to enter the residence, a 62-year-old man approached officers and told them he was responsible for the murder. Officers then entered the home and found a woman in her early 50s lying facedown in a pool of blood in the kitchen. She was pronounced dead at the scene, Jennings said. Homicide investigators from the Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office responded to the home and remained there this afternoon collecting evidence. The man was taken into custody by Orinda police and was being interviewed this afternoon.

His name was not immediately being released. Jennings said the man has been cooperative and told police that he had been living with the victim for more than a decade, though investigators have been unable to confirm that. Police said they have also recovered the suspected murder weapon, but what that weapon is and the victim’s exact cause of death have not yet been revealed. The woman’s identity is being withheld pending notification of her next-of-kin. It’s shocking, it’s a very safe community,” Jennings said. “We got the person in custody, the city is safe, there’s no reason to be alarmed.” Jennings said that the killing is Orinda’s first homicide since 2002.
