One of three robbery suspects who allegedly reached for a weapon during police contact in San Leandro Tuesday evening was arrested on suspicion of possessing a loaded firearm, police said. Around 5:10 p.m. officers approached three suspects in the 400 block of San Leandro Boulevard, who matched the description of robbers from an incident in the 1100 block of San Leandro Boulevard, police said.

One of the three, later identified as 27-year-old Oakland resident Markese Thomas, allegedly began to reach toward his waistband and would not obey officers’ commands to stop. The officers tried to restrain Thomas, who resisted and continued to reach down the front of his pants. After a short struggle, officers were able to control Thomas and found a loaded semi-automatic handgun in the front of his pants, according to police.

Thomas was arrested on suspicion of having a loaded firearm and resisting arrest. The two other suspects were cooperative, police said. It was later determined the three suspects were not involved in the earlier robbery.
