A Walnut Creek man has been charged with two felonies in connection with an assault and attempted rape at a park Saturday night, authorities said today. Francisco “Javier” Hernandez-Murrieta, 31, has been charged with assault to commit rape and false imprisonment by violence, police said. He is accused of attacking a woman just before 1 a.m. Saturday as she walked through a secluded Walnut Creek park next to the Iron Horse Trail.
The suspect grabbed the woman from behind, put his hand over her mouth and took her to the ground, according to police. The 31-year-old then forced the victim onto her back and restrained the woman as he straddled and groped her, police said. Police said the woman fought back, biting Hernandez-Murrieta’s hand and punching him in the face several times.
The suspect fled the scene, but was stopped by a Walnut Creek police officer responding to the victim’s 911 call. The officer arrested the 31-year-old and took him to county jail in Martinez. Anyone with information about this attack or other incidents potentially involving the same suspect is asked to call Walnut Creek police Detective Greg Leonard at (925) 256-3518.
