A San Leandro robbery victim was able track down her stolen iPhone with the “Find My iPhone” application and help police locate it in Oakland, where they arrested two suspected thieves, San Leandro police said. The 19-year-old victim was robbed shortly before 10 a.m. Friday near the corner of East 14th Street and Dutton Avenue in San Leandro. Two teenagers approached her and one asked if he could use her phone to call his mother. When she handed him the phone, the pair ran away, police said.

The victim called police and told them that she had installed the “Find My iPhone” application on her phone, and used a friend’s computer to access the location and pass it along to police. The application told her that the phone had been taken to International Boulevard and High Street in Oakland, and San Leandro police responded and stopped a car occupied by two people in that area.

Officers searched the car and found the victim’s iPhone, and the victim identified the two suspects as the thieves, police said. The suspects, both 16 years old, were arrested and taken to juvenile hall on suspicion of grand theft and possession of stolen property.”This was a great example of how technology assisted law enforcement locate stolen property and arrest two individuals,” San Leandro police Lt. Jeff Tudor said in a statement.”This application has been a very useful tool for law enforcement as iPhones are a very popular item for those who commit thefts or robberies,” Tudor said.
