A woman was shot in the throat while driving through Richmond on Interstate Highway 80 early today, according to police. The woman, a 57-year-old Newark resident, was driving west on I-80 near Hilltop Drive around 1:25 a.m. when she heard a popping sound and then realized her throat was bleeding, said Richmond police Sgt. Roger Buhlis.
The woman, who was returning home from a party in Vallejo, drove herself to a local hospital, where she was admitted in serious but stable condition with a gunshot wound to her throat. The woman did not see anyone in the area where the shot originated, and police have no suspect information.
Buhlis said the city’s Shot Spotter system did pick up the sound of the shot. Police do not have any information indicating the woman was being specifically targeted at this time, Buhlis said.
