A U.S. Army soldier from Salinas died over the weekend in an attack in Afghanistan, U.S. Department of Defense officials announced today. Spc. Vilmar Galarza Hernandez, 21, died on Saturday in the country’s Kandahar province, where enemy forces attacked his unit with an improvised explosive device, defense officials said.
Hernandez had been assigned to the 4th Battlaion, 23rd Infantry Regiment, 2nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division at Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Washington. Hernandez’s Facebook profile says he attended Everett Alvarez High School in Salinas and graduated in 2008.
