* Oakland officer involved shooting on Macarthur Boulevard May 9, suspect escaped

Oakland police are winding down an overnight search for a suspect who exchanged gunfire with police on Wednesday night, an Oakland police officer said.Police said the search began at around 9 p.m. when a vehicle pursuit ended in the 8000 block of Macarthur Boulevard and the suspect fled his vehicle on foot and opened fire on police.

At least one officer returned gunfire, and the suspect fled into a nearby yard. Officers were not injured by the shots, police said. Police established a perimeter in the area, and a SWAT team responded to assist in the search, which lasted for hours until early this morning.The suspect was not located, and police are preparing to leave the area, police said. No information about why police were pursuing the suspect, or a description of the suspect, was immediately available.
