Santa Cruz police have identified a woman who was fatally stabbed Monday morning as 38-year-old Shannon Kathleen Collins. Officers responded to reports of a possible stabbing in the 300 block of Broadway at 11:52 a.m. They found Collins suffering from multiple stab wounds and she died at the scene, police said. Police arrested Charles Anthony Edwards III, 43, of San Francisco near the intersection of Barson and Campbell streets close to the time of the crime, police said.
Police described Collins, a Santa Cruz resident, as a well-respected downtown business owner and member of the community. Based on their investigation, which included interviews with Edwards and witnesses, police said that the attack appears “senseless, unprovoked, and random.”Police said they are still trying to reconstruct where the victim was coming from and headed when she was attacked.Edwards was booked into the Santa Cruz County Jail on suspicion of murder.
According to police, Edwards has a long, violent criminal history in San Francisco and appears to have been in Santa Cruz for about a week. Police said they found the weapon they believe was used in the attack at the scene. Broadway was closed between Campbell and Ocean Streets during the investigation.
