One person was killed in an officer-involved shooting in Oakland early this morning, a police spokeswoman said. Two patrol officers attempted to contact three people in the 1900 block of 90th Avenue just after midnight, Oakland police spokeswoman Johnna Watson said. One of the suspects, believed to be armed, ran from the scene, police said. One of the officers pursued the suspect to the 9200 block of Birch Street, where there was an exchange of gunfire, police said.

The suspect was wounded and taken to a hospital, where he was later pronounced dead, police said. The officer was wounded in the lower extremities and was recovering in a hospital as of this morning, police said. The Oakland Police Department and the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office are investigating the fatal shooting. Anyone with information is asked to call Oakland police Sgt. S. Fleming at (510) 238-3821.
