UPDATE Suspect Killed in Shooting

A police officer and suspect were wounded in an exchange of gunfire in Oakland early this morning, a police officer said. Around midnight, a suspect shot the officer in the 9200 block of Birch Street and the officer returned fire, striking the suspect, Officer B. Young said.

Both were taken to hospitals. The officer was listed in stable condition this morning and the suspect’s condition was unknown, Young said.  No further information was immediately available.
