Police said a suspect who apparently committed suicide after firing at officers in Bethel Island early this morning is a 19-year-old man with ties to Bethel Island.Officers found the suspect, Bryan Akers-Davis, dead in his car around 5 a.m. near Piper and Sugar Barge roads, according to the Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office. About four hours earlier, Akers-Davis fled from a traffic stop in Oakley, prompting a police chase that led to Bethel Island, Oakley police said.

While on Gateway Boulevard in Bethel Island, the suspect fired multiple rounds from a high-powered assault weapon at police units trailing him, police said. The suspect fled the area and his car was later located at the Bethel Island Golf Course on Gateway Road. Police attempted to contact Akers-Davis over a PA system but the man was unresponsive.

Officers found the man dead from an apparently self-inflicted gunshot wound, police said.No officers were injured during the incident, although there was some damage to police cruisers.The sheriff’s and district attorney’s offices have launched a joint investigation to determine why the suspect fired at the officers, police said.
