A search for an armed fugitive who fled from police in Oakley and shot at officers on Bethel Island is in progress this morning, according to the Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office. Residents in the area of Piper and Sugar Barge roads have been advised to stay inside their homes and to lock all windows and doors while law enforcement personnel search for the suspect, sheriff’s officials said.
The suspect fled from police in Oakley after they tried to pull him over for a traffic violation near the corner of East Cypress Road and Knightsen Avenue at 12:51 a.m., sheriff’s spokesman Jimmy Lee said. Police chased the suspect onto Bethel Island, where the suspect shot at one of the officers near the corner of Piper and Sugar Barge roads, hitting a police car but not injuring anyone.
Police and sheriff’s officials are making use of a helicopter to search the area and are continuing the search for the gunman this morning, Lee said.
