While searching the residence of a man arrested in March on suspicion of illegal weapons possessions, Watsonville police found evidence that the suspect was involved in marijuana sales and gangs, police said Friday. The suspect, 20-year-old Antonio Chavez of Watsonville, was first arrested on March 21 during a traffic stop for a vehicle code violation on Roache Road near Green Valley Road.

Chavez, a passenger in the car, fled from the traffic stop, police said. After a short foot chase, he was arrested. Police said that during the chase Chavez removed a loaded gun from his waistband and discarded it under a parked car. Chavez was booked into Santa Cruz County Jail and later released pending charges. On Thursday, police returned to Chavez’s residence in Watsonville with a search warrant and an arrest warrant. After searching Chavez’s residence, police said they found evidence of marijuana sales, another weapon and gang indicia.
