Watsonville Police have identified a victim in a fatal stabbing that occurred on Saturday night as Brandon Gil, 21, of Watsonville. Police are still investigating what they believe to be a “gang related” incident that left Gil dead and one other man injured on Saturday night. Police responded to reports of a male lying in the roadway in the area of East Lake Avenue and Brennan Street around 10 p.m. Saturday night. Police say they arrived to find a man unconscious and barely breathing with a wound on his upper abdomen.  Gil was transported to the Watsonville Community Hospital, where he later died, police said.

Moments after police received the call, a man with a stab wound to his lower torso arrived at the Watsonville Community Hospital Emergency Room, police said.  According to police, the second stabbing victim underwent surgery and is now in stable condition.  Police suspect that the incident occurred in a parking lot near the 500 Block of Main Street. The incident appears to be gang related based on a lack of cooperation from the surviving victim, as well as the absence of other probable motives for a dispute, of which investigators found no evidence, police said.

Police later determined that Gil and the second victim were friends and that they had been together earlier Saturday night at El Miramar Sports Bar and Restaurant, near where the incident is believed to have occurred.
