The Alameda County coroner’s bureau is investigating the cause of death for a 16-year-old boy who was found dead in his juvenile jail cell Monday morning. LaDonna Harris, acting chief of the county’s probation department, said the boy was found dead at about 7:20 a.m. Monday in a sleeping posture in his single-person cell at the Juvenile Justice Center in San Leandro.

An initial autopsy conducted by the coroner’s bureau Tuesday did not indicate the boy’s cause of death. “Everything appeared as it should have been,” Harris said of the autopsy results. The coroner’s bureau will conduct additional tests to determine whether the boy had any alcohol or drugs in his system, but producing the results of those tests can take up to eight weeks. The boy’s identity has not been released because of his age.
