The Contra Costa County coroner’s office has released the name of a wanted parolee fatally shot by Antioch police Thursday afternoon as police attempted to detain him. The man was David John Lopez, 26, who family members said was known to frequent Antioch and Pittsburg but had no known place of residence, the coroner’s office said. Detectives in unmarked vehicles spotted Lopez as he was driving, police Capt. Leonard Orman said. Lopez, who was wanted for a parole violation, did not yield when
police attempted to stop him near Hillcrest Avenue and 13th Street, and two detectives fired shots at the suspect, Orman said.
Lopez, who was on parole for possession of stolen property, was taken to a hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. A 25-year-old female passenger in the suspect’s vehicle was not harmed, Orman said. Orman said the detectives opened fire because they believed they were in danger.
